Crap Hound

I contributed to a couple of issues of this unique zine in the 90's
while residing in Portland. Each issue is filled with high-contrast art,
carefully taken from vintage catalogs, advertising, obscure books, and found ephemera. Crap Hound has received enthusiastic reviews from sources including The New York Times Magazine, RE/Search Books, the American Institute Graphic Arts, and the Cooper-Hewitt National Design Museum. An interview with creator Sean Tejaratchi can be found here. Back issues are now being reprinted by Reading Frenzy.

The Pipeline

In 1984 I skated Upland California's famous skatepark. The Pipeline had the first full pipe built in the U.S.A. and a crazy combi-pool that I watched Hosoi practice his latest trick, the Rocket Air in. Steve Alba showed up with a photog for some handplant shots too. Another regular was an 80 year old skater that was carving blue tile! The park was bulldozed in 1988 but word has it that Upland now has replicated the famous full pipe and bowl in a public park.

Tintin

I've been a lifelong fan of the Tintin books. Hergé said "the biggest difficulty with comics is to show exactly what is necessary and sufficient to understand the story; nothing more, nothing less" This theory of graphic representation came to be know as the "clear line." A big influence on my early drawings...

Also recently came across Tintinologist for total fanatics.

Richard Powers
